Martin Freeland aka Man With No Name (by Jungle Jim)

Long time fans of Man With No Name may have been surprised at
how long it took for the second album to come out. When it finally
did, in June 1998, many will certainly have been disconcerted by the
presence of vocal tracks. I asked Martin (Man With No Name)
               Freeland to explain this behaviour.

"I don't have any problems with making tracks with vocals on, I don't
think vocals in themselves are an offence, but I do have a problem
with making albums with tracks that are incompatible. I would have
been happy to make the vocal tracks as a different act. Personally I
don't feel they're compatible with the sort of music that I'm into
making as 'Man with no name".

"The vocal tracks on this particular album are mainly due to record
company pressure. The problem stems from getting involved with a
major label. Major labels are basically interested in unit sales,
regardless of the kind of music that they're selling, whereas
independent labels are set up because somebody likes music.

"What happens (with a major) when you sign the dotted line, you find
that the goal posts move as you go through the deal. You start off
with a situation where you're going to do an album in your style,
because that's what you got signed for, then at some point during
the proceedings, the men in suits on the sixth floor decide that
instrumental music doesn't sell, etc, what we need is radio, bla bla
..Then they start to put pressure on the A&R guy to put pressure on
you to do something other than what you'd normally do.

"Although I had artistic control over the music, I don't have control
over the spend. The implication is, if you don't bend to the way that
we feel you should be presented they won't work your album - they
won't invest money in it - and therefore it will sink without trace.

"I actually finished an album in January 1997, which was an
instrumental album, and had I been on an independent, would have
been the album. Eighteen months later the album has actually come
out with tracks that feature vocals.

"You're not in a situation where you're able to go elsewhere because
you sign an exclusive agreement as an artist with that label. The
complication is that although Paul Oakenfold signed me to Perfecto
Records, ultimately that label was part of the East West branch of
Warner Brothers, therefore, all but the A&R was East West - a
corporate machine interested in selling large quantities of records.

"Another problem with that set up is that they tend to go for the
domestic market before the rest of the world. Previously I've always
sold as many records in other countries, particularly Scandinavia,
Israel, Germany, France as I have in the UK. With the way majors
are set up, if they don't break you big in the domestic market, they
don't bother at all with the international market. I probably won't sell
as many records abroad with a major as I would have done with an
               independent.

"Having delivered what they asked me to do, they still didn't work the
record, so I've ended up in exactly the same position, only
unfortunately eighteen months later than I needed to. If I'd have
been doing things the way I was three or four years ago, I would
probably be starting the third album after that - on my forth album by
               now.

"It's an experience I've had that I've learned from. I sometimes think
I should have known better because I've been doing this for a long
time. At the time it seemed like the ideal thing to do.

"Paul (Oakenfold) is a great guy, [hear hear!] he's totally into music.
He has the independent records attitude, he wants to sell music that
he's into. East West couldn't give a shit if I turned country and
western as long as it sold lots of units. I firmly believe that if you're
really into music you should only ever do what you really want to do, if
you try to make music that is just what other people want it won't
               come out right.

"I have to look forward now rather than back. If I keep looking back
at what didn't work I could get really upset about it, because I know
for a fact that I could have done as well on a small label - with the
               exception of profile.

"I have to say that over the last two years in the mainstream market
the Man With No Name ident has grown, but that's largely to do with
Paul Oakenfold more than a record label because the press side of
things at East West was abysmal.

"There was nobody in the press department who had the slightest
idea what trance music was, or the slightest interest in what it was.
(Actually there was one girl who was quite OK, but she left about six
weeks later.) You're talking to people who are into Simply Red and
you're trying to explain about underground trance and they're not
               really getting the point.

"Although I've had higher chart positions with the singles, it didn't
transfer into massive album sales. Vavoom charted at forty three in
the top sixty which wouldn't have happened with an independent.
Basically the records were sold in shops that return to the chart
rather than shops that don't return to the chart, you don't see Blue
Room or Dragonfly records in the top sixty, although they probably
               sell as many.

"I know that I sold more of the first album on Concept In Dance in
the UK than I did on Perfecto in the UK. That is pretty dreadful,
bearing in mind that my profile is much higher, it's the second album
and you've got a corporate machine behind it rather than an
               independent label.

"Fortunately for me, internationally there are people out there who
are looking for my music. I think in the fullness of time, it will pick up
to where it should have been. The album selling was what I can only
describe as absolutely dreadful and a disgrace, to me and Paul and
the people in the club promotions department who have worked the
               singles really hard.

"Taking it outside of the trance scene, I would say that if you asked
a dozen people at a dozen people at a house night-club, say Cream
for example, to name one trance artist , they would all say Man With
No Name, so it's good that it's crossed the boundary. The strange
thing is that I don't think the vocal tracks had anything to do with
               that."

In my opinion, tracks like Teleport and Floor Essence were in fact responsible for
the crossing of boundaries. Martin agreed:

"The thing with Floor Essence is that it's not actually a Trance track,
it's a House track and the funny thing is that the House press
always write things like 'the best Goa Trance track ever, Floor
Essence', and it ain't a Goa Trance track, it's a House track."

Is Martin still totally committed to Trance?

"In my experience, every time I introduce someone with any kind of
musicality about them to the trance scene they go 'Wow, I can't
believe that the vibe could be as good as this, I've never experienced
               something as good as this.'

"But getting people to go to a party for the first time is like pulling
teeth, because they think they know what they're going to get and 'I
don't like dance music, I don't like techno, bla bla bla ..' and then
they go 'why didn't you make me come before, this isn't techno, this
               is really good.'

"I've been partying for seven years, and I've never had anybody
come out of a party yet who's gone ' oh no, that's not for me,' they
always go 'when's the next one?'"

I suggested that the name 'Trance' could be a problem.

"We never did come up with a good name. 'Goa Trance' is the kiss
of death, if it's got the word Goa in it, then it's 'put it in the bargain
bin', it conjures up this idea of cheap squiggly noises.

"'Psychedelic Trance' kind of implies that you need to take LSD. Lets
face it, the vast majority of the people in the world are never ever
going to experiment with LSD and that probably puts them off even
checking it out. I know for a fact that you don't need to take any kind
of substance to enjoy the music.

"'Trance' itself implies that you just go off into a trance, but you don't,
you just get lost in the music.

"All the other names have been nicked. You can't call it techno
because that implies a certain style of music. We need to come up
with something else. It's not so much trance as hypnotic music."

Martin is now a free agent:

"At this moment, I've had the letter which says that regretfully, they
are not going to exercise their option, I am now free to offer my
recording services to whoever I want, so that's precisely what I'm
               going to do.

"Another thing that 's annoying me is that there are compilation
companies asking to put my tracks out on their compilations, and
East West won't allow them to do it, for their own personal reasons, I
don't know what they are, but I can't see any justification for saying
we don't want to make money. They're not doing me any good, and
they're not doing themselves any good."

So independent labels take note, Man With No Name is now a man
with no contract - presumably not for long!

What we think of it...

     Sun Aug 23 20:00:56 GMT 1998
Martin Freeland's second album is certainly competent but oh so unadventurous. Classic,
rather blippy MWNN sounds with a sprinkling of new ideas. The only track that stands out
to me is "Possessed", a full-on danceathon. Conversely "Seratonin Sunrise" and "The First
Day" with their vocals are a big turn-off, despite their nice blend of power and lightness.
And these 2 minute 'interstitial' tracks - WHY? Rather like the recent Genetic album I get
the feeling that it's too little and much too late. Reinvent yourself in '99, please.

Well well. I still admire MWNN despite his not-so-good album this time. I've changed my
mind so I like his previous album better. I have a different version of this album, I guess it's
from Japan or something... My MWNN's EMtS Track Listing: 1. Possessed 2. Mainframe 3.
Camouflage 4. Seratonin Sunrise 5. Under the Influence 6. Treacle 7. Tarantula 8. Horizon
     9. Spaghettification 10. Own the World 11. Vavoom! And my album's cover has a white
     background. -M-

I got the Japanese version. OWN THE WORLD and UNDER THE INFLUENCE rescue

The album has the classic MWNN sound. For me the best tracks are "Possesed",
"Tarantula" and "Own the world".But the track of "Seratonin sunrise" is a complete piece of
shit... The guy on this track tries to sing like the one of Underworld`s "Born slippy":

Yeah......old formula, crap vocaltrancebeatpseudohop, and what's up with short liuttle
numbers like spaghettification......well it's obvious that Martin is after the greenmail since
he's hooked up with Paul "Money Bags" Oakenfold, and tracks like "The First Day" are
aimed more at the mainstrem clubs like Cream and shit....this isn't underground of cutting
     edge stuff....it's houseclub-but-today-we-have-a-trance-pop-hour kinda stuff......although
this album is 3 years behind and everything, I have to say that "Possessed" is a kickass
track, even considering the slight cheese factor that is audible in all of his tracks.......96 is
no longer cutting edge Martin....think 2002, forget Perfecto and the dineros, and use your
talent to please the crowd who really do give a shit!!!!!Peace....nothing personal!!!

I think Oakenfold (president of Perfecto) and MWNN are trying to market trance as the
global dance language to older clubbers of the aced house generation. Of course, that
involves artistic compromise. The album is formulaic; but we don't care because Vavoom!
Own the World, Treacle, and Possessed all kick!

I hated his last album Moment of Truth. This album is a little bit late in coming. I would have
raved about this if it had been released during the 1996's but now mmm, pretty sad.
Nonetheless despite the missing adventure or story of each track the sound and synths
are arressting. Possessed, Own the World all appeal in the MWNN fashion of yesteryear
but none of the tracks match the intensity of Teleport(My favorite MWNN track). 7/10

Another disappointing album from Mr. John Doe... The problem is the overall feel, on which
this album lacks majorly. But, on the other hand, its a great improvement from MWNN's last
album, which was absolutely shite. I also have the Japanese version. The two tracks that
are actually really good, are Possessed and Tarantula. But does he have to SING? Own
     The World is also competent.

Told ya! Whenever you sign to a major label, expect your music to have it's balls turned
inside out, and hung to dry! Martin Freeland's EARTH MOVING THE SUN was the best
effort from a respected underground psychedelic trance artist going overground and
crossing over. Cheers to Martin for the fat contract, but jeers to all of us who still REFUSE
to let go of "Moment of Truth", and all the early tracks from TIP's YELLOW compilation!!!

Is it necessary that your ears bleed from so many fucked up sounds that don't make sense

Well, I´ve got the European version and it is excellent. MWNN is not afraid to do something
new in trance music like in ”The first day” where he experiments with vocals. It turns out to

The difference between moment of truth and this album: Soul! I was not dissapointed
though, because I expected the decadence of a static style and sound. For us, the freaky
seachers of sounds that will alter our present state of mind, this album will lack on the
depth and the power. If you are in a club and the music is secondary to the superficial
social interactions of materialists then MWNN is in business. Sorry Martin "The Chesse" is
getting close and you are liking the taste of it.

There can be no doubting that Earth Moving the Sun may sound dated but there are still
some fantastic trax on the album (except for the cheese vocals i have to say spoil the

Waste of money. Mildly psychedelic clubtrance. Mr Freeland is surely capable of doing
better tunes, I know it. "Mainframe" is ok in the morning and "Possessed" in a houseclub,
     but that's it.

After finding back to those two MWNN albums after a while, I actually like them both.
Forget everything about any of them being shite, cause MWNN RULES! Although I
actually now think that Moment Of Truth is a real classic, EMTS shows Freelands potential.
An album concisting of tracks like Possessed, Tarantula, Own The World, mOMENT Of
Truth, Subterfuge, Azymuth ++ would be a real good one! Don't you agree? Please, make

I liked the first album when it came out around 2½ year ago, and maybe I would have liked
this as well back, but now I? I don't think so. Not that I don't like melodic stuff, but this is
using the exact same samples, ideas and melodies as two or three years ago. It might do

Oakenfold is just trying another manouver to survive the Trance crisis and take over the big

Hello Martin! Your album is for sure a good album, but yes i have to agree with
someone, the underworld vocals isn't good in the trance world you and I are
living in. U should try ahead with the Lunar Cycle style and stay in the hard

I guess the majority of you have not come acros the interview that MF did
recently, where he expressed his disillusionment with big labels. As anyone who
KNOWS knows, Perfecto is a subsidiary of Warner, and yes, that's all Warner
cares about is money. It has NOTHING to do with Paul Oakenfold. So quit
jumping all over his back. On the other hand, I have to agree with most people, I
found EMTS quite boring and doesn't even come close to the complexity of
MOT. Personally, I hate the singing and the Lunar Cycle 12" is my all time
favourite MWNN track. If anyone cares, I'll e-mail the interview if you can't find it
on the NET. Martin is currently a free agent, so for all of you pissheads that
haven't got anything better to do than bitch, get off your asses and start your
own label to sign him if you really care to do anything more than criticize him
and think you can offer better!

Although not Martin's greatest moment, but this CD pritty nice. Classic MWNN
style, "parallel universe", "tracle", and "vavoom"(dispite the commertialness) are
my favorit tracks. (Own The world and Serotonin Sunrise are pritty lame) It
seems Martin makes it a habit to not put his best work in his albums, because
his best work is never represented in his albums(with the exception of "sugar
rush"), tracks like "teleport", "Retox", and not to forget his excellent remixes like
"The sleeper" and "Greece 2000". All and all, I hope the next one's better, but if
you like MWNN, you'll enjoy this one also.

I think that MWNN rules, the first album was great, tracks like Floor essence
and sugar rush are what got me in to trance in the first place. The new album is
great Own the world, Vavoom, Possessed, The Breech and of course
SERATONIN SUNRISE. There I like it and I don't care what anyone else
thinks. To all those who dissmiss this track just cos it has singing on it...Stop
taking youselfes so damned seriously and experiment a little. The base line is
increadible, the leads ditto and the vocals (while admittedly a rubbish talking
underworld wannabe dunderhied)rocks ass!!!! Your all just being

Once again, MWNN has created a GREAT album of even GREATER
Psychedelic Trance! A better takeoff than Own the World is impossible to find!
Vavoom! is also a really great track! The singing on some of the tracks sounds
like shit, so my advice is to drop vocals. :)

                                     goa_2000@mail.ru

          Tue Apr 4 11:07:25 GMT 2000
Hmmm ... In another review I wrote that MWNN turns whatever he touches into
gold (that is, remixing other projects). But it seems like his own stuff leaves a lot
to be desired. I don't think there should ever be pop-style singing in
techno/trance/goa music. Period. But some people can improve themselves if
they try hard enough. The first step is to listen to your own heart - like every
underground techno artist does. To sell yourself out to a commercial label is
creative suicide. (Look what's happened to Aphex Twin!!) Listen to your own
heart, MWNN. There you will find the potential for truly groundbreaking,
beautiful trance. Remember this philosophy: MUSIC FROM THE HEART, NOT
FOR THE BUCK. Good luck in future endeavors, Martin.

Leave the politics behind and listen to the god damn music. The first time I
heard the CD I must admit I nearly cried when I heard "Seratonin Sunrise" with
the Chemical Brother style lyrics, but now I must admit to it as being one of my
favourite tunes; the underlying bassline is so cool (the MVO mix being much
better than the original). The vocals in "The First Day" are very bad and remind
me of the Petshop Boys, despite the decent tune. The short tracks are also
pointless. However, Martin still manages to retain his own melodic sound and all
the other tracks are really rather good (as are "Mainframe and "Under the
Influence" on the Japanese version which I have heard as mp3s). Especially
good tunes: "Vavoom!" and "Own the World". Come on you guys is the sound
really that much more commercial than his earlier tracks? Simply NO. Too much
goa trance these days has no melody whatsoever. "Lunar Cycle", "Sugar Rush"
and "Teleportation" were the tunes that got me into trance back in 95-96 and
he remains my favourite artist to this day. All in all if you like it trippy and really
psychedelic stick to your Israeli trance and people like the Green Nuns...if you
want a bit of "much-harder-than-commercial-trance" and a feel good melody,
then MWNN is the guy!!! Hopefully the next album is out soon (minus the
cheesy vocals please). PS/Martin if you read this please play at Megadog in
Manchester again you kicked arse last time you were there or...how do you find
          out where you play live??

Try to open your mind a little bit. I know that the vocals sound like born slippy

Hmmm, I haven't really been a historical follower of any specific artist. What I do
know is that when listening to this album "Vavoom", "Own the World" and
