Biography
The dutch band Junkie XL debuted in 1997 with their album Saturday
Teenage Kick. Their music is a mix of rock and dance, closely related to
the
sound of the Prodigy. The power of this music is best expressed in a live
performance. Junkie XL is one of the first bands that plays modern electronic
music and combines it with a good live show.
Tom Holkenborg - Concept, mixing, sequencing,
samplers
Rude Boy - Raps
Dino Cazares - Guitarriffs
Rene van der Zee - Live guitars
Baz Mattie - Live drums
DJ Frankie D. - Scratching, vinyl cuts (member until
June 1998)
Junkie XL's music is a mixture of styles; alternative dance with a rock
attitude.
Tracks like "War" are hardcore. But the real Junkie XL-feel is in Saturday
Teenage Kick: an uptempo HipHop beat with a groovy guitar and Rudeboys
monotone raps.
On stage Tom still is the main man, the sequencer. All the instruments
that
are played on stage come through his desk and he adds all kinds of effects
to
them. This way Tom creates the album's soundscape on stage and leaves
gaps where the other members can fill in. Fairly different from a traditional
band.
According to Tom it is very hard to perform this kind of music live. "To
soon you
end up sounding like a schoolband", says the man behind the music. After
a
lot of rehearsing the band first performed in "De Melkweg" in Amsterdam
in
November 1997.
A few months later band did 4 or five shows with The Prodigy who were
touring Germany. After the performance Prodigy-musician Liam Howlett told
the band it was the best show he saw in years. He even dedicated some
songs to Junkie XL.
Tom Holkenborg
Tom is Junkie XL. The idea was his and the music is completly created by
him.
On stage Tom is the man at the main controls. He blends the music with
his
mixer and controls the samplers.
Holkenborg, born in 1968, is originally from Friesland (the northern region
of
the Netherlands). But he now lives in Amsterdam, where he also has his
own
studio. He became interrested in rock when he heard The Who's "Live at
Leeds" at the age of 8. Two years later he was making his own music.
He started playing in Funk and Raggea bands at the age of 14 and later
moved to New Wave. At that same age he started working in an musicshop,
he learned all about keyboards and started experimenting with electronics.
In
the late eigthies Tom was a member of the Talking Heads-alike Weekend at
Waikiki.
Tom is, more recently, known for his remixes on bands like Fear Factory
(Remanufacture), Dog Eat Dog and Kong. Just before starting Junkie XL
(1995), he was a part of the industrial band Nerve.
The Junkie part of the name is due to Tom's working appeal. His friends
say
he's a workaholic, a working junkie. In fact it was Dino Cazares who first
said:
"Hey Junkie, what's up?!". Due to his hard working, Tom had a heartattack
at
the age of 27! He was, even as a child, never able to do anything normally.
He
had to quit playing soccer when he was 12, because he trained to hard.
'XL'
stands for expanding limits. As Junkie XL tries to blend a lot of musicstyles
and therefore moving the borders.
Rude Boy
The Silver Surfing Rude Boy is the rapper of Junkie XL. Also known as the
Microphone Nazi, he fires his monotone lyrics at the audience.
Rude Boy, Patrick Tilon in real life, was born in Surinam in 1965. Later,
at the
age of five, he moved to the Netherlands. The nickname was given to him
by a
friend who was a fan of The Specials. After hearing LL Cool J.'s &qout;I
need
a beat&qout; in 1984, Rude Boy started rockin' the mike. He has performed
in
a some bands of which TD'80 was one of the first. But he really became
famous as the rapper of the dutch rock-and-rap group Urban Dance Squad.
Rude Boy is quite a wanted rapper in the Netherlands. Tom Holkenborg had
already made 40 instrumental tracks for which he wanted some vocals. One
of
the persons on his wishlist was 'Patrick'. Although Tom's friends told
him that
Rude Boy was too busy with the U.D.S., he gave it a try.
Rude Boy received a demo tape which he played on his little gettoblaster.
After the first track he thought "This is some good shit!" By the fourth
or fifth
track Rude Boy knew what to do: join in! When Tom heard his enthousiasm,
he canceled all other vocalists and started working with Rude Boy.
Besides of rapping, Rude Boy really likes to work out at the local gym.
His daily
work out also improved his vocal endurance as he says.
Dino Cazares
Dino, a Mexican, has played all guitarriffs for the album 'Saturday Teenage
Kick'. On stage his roll is taken by Rene van der Zee. He is a member of
the
L.A.-based industrial band named Fear Factory. This band also appears on
RoadRunner. Tom Holkenborg has done a few remixes of this band.
Rene van der Zee
Rene adds the rock power to the Junkie XL live performances. His powerfull
guitarriffs give the music a real drive. Rene likes his part in Junkie
XL, because
his role is to play a riff that rocks instead of a boring solo. He is an
ex-member
of the band Cooper.
Baz Mattie
Baz Mattie plays the live-drums when Junkie XL does a performance.
He was the drummer of the dutch band La Lupa
and also is an ex-member
of Shine.
DJ Frankie D.
The scratches and vinylcuts are performed by Frankie D. On stage he also
likes to fool around a little with Rude Boy and battle him with B-Boy moves.
Frankie D., who lives in Amsterdam, has been a well-known house-DJ for
quite some years.
Frankie D. left Junkie XL in June 1998 after Tom had said that he couldn't
work along with the other members.

The Dutch band Junkie XL started in 1995
and debuted in 1997 with their album
"Saturday Teenage Kick". Their music
is a mix of rock and big beats, often
compared with the sound of The Prodigy
and The Chemical Brothers. The power of
this music is absolutely best expressed
in a live performance. Junkie XL is one
of the first bands that plays modern electronic
music and combines it with a
good live show.
Junkie XL's music
is a mixture of styles; alternative dance with a
rock-attitude. The real Junkie XL-feel
is probably in "Saturday Teenage Kick":
an uptempo hip-hop beat with a groovy
guitar and Rudeboy behind the mic.
Junkie XL's name
is based on what Tom Holkenborg described as his
"studio-junkie" reputation. He's seen as
a real workaholic. The XL is referring
to the process of "eXpanding
Limits" (of perception, reality, etc.).
On stage Tom Holkenborg is the main man,
the sequencer. All sounds played on
stage come through his desk and he adds
all kinds of effects to them. Tom once
said: "The basic ingredient that separates
us from other electronic bands is
that groups like Fatboy Slim are presented
as dance acts with rock guitars. I
consider us more
of an alternative rock-band using dance tools."
According to Tom it is very hard to perform
this kind of music live: "To soon
you end up sounding like a school band",
says the man behind the music. After a
lot of rehearsing, the band first
performed in "De Melkweg" in Amsterdam,
November 1997. A few months later the band
did some shows with The Prodigy who
were touring in Germany. After
that little tour, lots of people claimed
(including Liam Howlett...) that Junkie
XL stealed the music-concept from The
Prodigy. But all the Junkie XL-fans know
that that's not true, 'cos Tom was
already mixing rock and electro with Nerve.
Junkie XL did an amazing tour in America.
They played in about 80 cities (on
their own and for example with Gravity
Kills). Junkie XL ended to be first in
the Dance Pool Charts (which means that
20.000 American club-dj's selected the
Junkie-song to be the best
song of the year). Their popularity was also
indicated by the fact that MTV called Junkie
XL to ask if they could broadcast
the "Billy Club" video (Roadrunner has
no contact with MTV....). By the way,
Junkie XL
has a contract with Roadrunner for 5 (!) albums......
Tom Holkenborg wants the Junkie XL-music
to be a combination of dance and rock
music. The music must be timeless, like
(for example) The Beatles. At the first
album "Saturday Teenage Kick",
the rock-sound dominated. Although this
debut-album was a great success, Tom didn't
think it was timeless. The second
Junkie XL album "Big Sounds
Of The Drags", released in 1999, is more a
dance-album with a 70's sound.
At the end of 1999, Junkie XL stopped playing
with a whole band on stage. The
cooperation (Dino Cazares, Rene van der
Zee, Baz Mattie and Frankie D. were not
real members of Junkie XL, they were just
working together with Tom) stopped
because of financial reasons
and because of the fact that Tom wants to
represent a dance-act and that works
better with only Tom and Rudeboy on
stage...
In June 2000, Rudeboy quitted Junkie XL
and Tom plays all performances alone.
Now he puts a real cool DJ-act on stage.
Tom Holkenborg >>
Tom Holkenborg IS Junkie XL. The whole idea
was his and the music is completely
created by him, except the lyrics of course.
On stage, Tom is the man at the
main controls.
Tom Holkenborg was born in Friesland
(The Netherlands) in 1968. But now he
lives in Amsterdam, where he has his own
studio. He became interested in rock
when he heard The Who's "Live at Leeds"
at the age of 8. Two years later (at
the age of 10!) he was making his own music.
He was raised in a musical family,
having a mother who
was a music professor at a local university and a
harmonica-playing father.
He started playing in Funk and Reggae bands
at the age of 14 and later he moved
to new Wave. At that same age he started
working in a music-shop, he learned
all about keyboards and started experimenting
with electronics. In the late
eighties Tom was a member of the, what
he described as a "Talking Heads-alike",
Dutch band Weekend At Waikiki.
After that, Tom became a freelance producer
and remixer. He is more recently
known for his remixes on bands like Fear
Factory (Remanufacture), Dog Eat Dog
and Kong. Just before starting Junkie XL
in 1995, he was part of the industrial
band Nerve, which he left due to
what he describes as "personal problems".
The Junkie part of the name is due to Tom's
working appeal. His friends say
he's a workaholic, a working junkie.
In fact it was Dino Cazares who first
said: "Hey Junkie, what's up?!". Due to
his hard working and too much alcohol,
Tom had some heart-problems at the age
of 27! Nowadays, Tom is working less
hard than he used to do, but he still
works much harder than normal people...
At the end of 1999, the whole
band behind Junkie XL was "dismissed" and
nowadays, Tom and Rudeboy are doing all
live-performances together. Tom wanted
to go more into the dance-scene and he
was unable to do that with a complete
band on stage.

Rudeboy >>
Rudeboy, also known as "The Silver
Surfering Rudeboy" and "The Microphone
Nazi", is the rapper of Junkie XL.
Rudeboy (Patrick Tilon in real life) was
born in Surinam in 1965. He moved to
The Netherlands at the age of five. His
nickname was given to him by a friend
who was a fan of the English ska-band
"The Specials". In 1984 Rudeboy started
rockin' the mike. He performed in a some
bands of which TD'80 was one of the
first. But he really got famous as the
rapper of the Dutch rock-and-rap group
The Urban Dance Squad.
Rudeboy is quite a wanted rapper in The
Netherlands. Tom Holkenborg had already
made 40 instrumental tracks for which he
wanted some vocals. One of the persons
on the top of his wish-list was Patrick.
Although Tom's friends told him that
Rudeboy was too
busy with The Urban Dance Squad, he gave it a try.
Rudeboy received a demo-tape from
Tom and since that day, Rudeboy and Tom
Holkenborg are working together in Junkie XL.
Besides of rapping, Rudeboy really
likes to work out at the local gym. His
daily work out also improved his vocal
endurance as he says. He is also a great
Beatles fan and his favorite phrase is: "It's vital!".
Since the Urban Dance Squad broke up (February,
2000) Rudeboy is only a member
of Junkie XL now. Besides
of that, he is also working a lot with other
musicians (Seda from the Osdorp
Posse and DNA form the Squad for example).
June 7th, 2000: Rudeboy quits with Junkie
XL. He doesn't feel comfortable with
the fact that Tom wants to go more
in the dance-direction and doesn't want
Rudeboy on stage all of the time. That
made Rudeboy decide to leave Junkie XL.

René van der Zee added the rock-power to
the Junkie XL live performances. His
powerful guitar-riffs give the music

Junkie XL, because his role was to play
a riff that rocks instead of a "boring"
solo. Once he was a member of the band
Cooper. During the time that Junkie XL

Dino Cazares >>
Dino Cazares, a Mexican, has played all
guitar-riffs for the album "Saturday

was taken by René van der Zee. Dino is a
member of the L.A.-based industrial band
named Fear Factory. This band also
appears on Roadrunner Records. Tom Holkenborg
has done a few remixes for this
band.
Frankie D. >>
The scratches and vinylcuts on the
first album "Saturday Teenage Kick" are
performed by Frankie D. On stage he also
liked to fool around a little with
Rudeboy and battle him with B-Boy moves.
He lives in Amsterdam and has been a
well-known house-DJ for quite some years.
Frankie D. couldn't get along with the
other members of Junkie XL. He didn't
have any experience with playing
in a band. He left Junkie XL in June 1998
after Tom Holkenborg told him that
he couldn't work along with the other
members.

B.S.O.T.D. digi-pack, regular or U.K. vesion?
Lots of people are wondering what the differences
between the digi-pack
version, the regular "Big Sounds Of The Drags"
album and the U.K.-version are.
Well, here it is:
Length of the album: 74:25
minutes (regular) and 74:23 minutes
(digi-pack)
Future In Computer Hell part
2: lasts 21:45 on the regular album.
After about 8 minutes, the
song turns to a soft rustling with a beautiful
melody of bells and strings
in it which persists for a couple of minutes.
After that, there just rustling....
The songs lasts 8:54 on the digi-pack
version and the U.K.-version.
Extra songs: the digi-pack
album contains 2 extra songs (Disco 2000,
which lasts 4:38 and Zerotonine
(Extended Neurotransmitter) which lasts
8:11). The U.K.-version has
3 extra songs (Disco 2000, Reprise Big Slacks
and Bon Voyage).
Track order: The three versions
have a different track order, see the
Discography-section.
Cover: the digi-pack version
is composed of a paper cover. The regular
version, however, is made
of a plastic cover with a booklet.
Release date: The U.K.-version
has been released in July, 2000. The
other 2 version have been
released at the same time (October 18, 1999).
Record Label: The U.K.-version
has been released on Manifesto Records.
The other 2 versions have
been released in Roadrunner Records.
