Jungle Brothers
Sorry folks, but like most of the discographies on this site,
no write-up here...maybe I'll get around
to it at some point, but I'll just focus on the group's releases
for now.
Albums
Straight Out The
Jungle -
Idlers/Warlock 1988
(2704)
Well...here it is, the very first
Native Tongues full-length
release, and a very solid one
at that. Although the
material presented on this
album is quite different to
the material later released
by fellow Native Tongues
affiliates, it set a foundation
for what was to be a dynasty
of phenomenal hip-hop
albums in the Native
Tongues catalogue of
releases.

Done By The
Forces Of Nature -
Warner Bros. 1989
(26072)
A little more varied and
ecclectic than their debut,
"Down By The Forces Of
Nature" is considered a
classic by both Jungle
Brothers fans and Native
Tongue fans alike. However,
it took a little while for the
rest of the hip-hop
community to come around
to this album as the music,
production, and songs were
very different to what was
featured on their debut. But
in this new era of
consciousness and
afrocentricity, "Down By The
Forces Of Nature"
developed a very strong
following.

Surprisingly, this was not the
album the Jungle Brothers
wanted to release. No one
really knows anything about
this "other" LP the JB's were
going to release, but the
rumours were that it was
much better than this
release. Anyhow, fans were
quite dissapointed with this
offering. After dropping the
monster cut '40 Below
Trooper' on 12", fans were
expecting more of the same
on this one...but were
treated to music of a very
different flavour. In fact, the
production was downright
wierd at times and songs
like 'Blahbludify' and 'Spittin
Wicked Randomness'
basically went over
everyone's head.

Sadly, this album marks a
major turning point in the
JB's career. This album is
clearly not intended for the
same audience that
"Straight Out The Jungle"
was created for.
Additionally, the ever fickle
hip-hop audience was just
not feeling their music
anymore although it got
much love over in Europe
and Japan.

Jimbrowski -
Idlers/Warlock 1987
(014)
The first ever commercial
release by the Native
Tongues featured a tribute
to...er...Jimmy. A very funny
song that was to receive
much love by the hip-hop
community with its likeable
production and hillarious
subject matter.

Because I Got It

Idlers/Warlock 1988
(016)
A decent 12" showcasing
an early favorite off the new
LP. Nothing much in terms
of exclusive material to talk
about here...

I'll House You -
Idlers/Warlock (022)
Ahhhh...this track is
considered a leader in the
soon to be hated hip-house
movement. It is one of the
first (if not the first) tracks to
use MC's over a house beat.
And it received much love by
many, especially fans
overseas. It is interesting to
note how some of the most
vocal critics of house music
probably enjoyed this track
quite a bit when they first
heard it.

Straight Out The
Jungle -
Idlers/Warlock (035)
Whew...if there's one 12"
you must get from the JB's,
it's this one. Probably the
most solid and sought after
12" in their entire catalogue,
it features two incredible
remixes plus a b-side. The
LP version of Sounds Of
The Safari is pretty dope,
but the remix is a
hands-down classic. It's
basically a collage of
jungle/animal sounds placed
over a phat set of
breakbeats. The other remix
is basically 6 minutes of
pure dopeness. Although
you can still hear elements
of the original, they
managed to smooth it out
enough to give it a really
distinct sound. Oh yeah, 'In
Time', the b-side, is basically
a lyrical remix (same beat) to
'The Promo' and features
Q-Tip.

Beyond This World
- Warner Bros. 1989
(21390)
Showcasing a track off the
new album, as well as a
move to mega-label Warner
Brothers, this 12" is still a
very sought after piece of
Jungle Brothers wax. With
the phat Bone-A-Baby Bam
Beat and the incredible
remix to the original Promo,
hip-hop DJ's were all over
this hot 12". "Promo number
1 Q-Tip had a fade, Promo
number 2, Q-tip rocks

What "U" Waitin'
"4"? - Warner Bros.
1989 (4001)
Featuring a half-decent
remix and a horrible remix,
this promo was aimed for
the club DJ. But not to take
anything away from this
record, 'What U Waitin 4' is
one the best hip-hop club
tracks ever made...with a
phat beat and fun lyrics.

the more solid tracks off the
LP on the b-side. Gotta love

Well, I think the track listing
tells all...this 12" is packed
with UK house remixes.
Save the nice remix of 'J
Beez Comin Through'
(featured on the previous
12"), North American JB
fans were not overly
impressed with this release.

Doin' Our Own
Dang - Warner Bros.
1990 (21728)
OK, there is basically 1
reason this 12" is so dope,
the Do It To The JB's Mix.
This is classic Native
Tongues all the way and the
same track was featured on
the video (much to the
horror of fans who thought
this version was on the
album!). Unfortunatley, the
LP version pales in
comparison to this one and
the Richie Fermie Mix was
pretty wack.

40 Below Trooper
Warner Bros. 1993
(40764)
The JB's continue their
magic touch with 12"s on
this one...40 Below Trooper
blew the fuck up on pretty
much every hip-hop mix
show. If it wasn't the LP
Version, it was the
bassed-out remix that was
getting much love from all
the heads. No one really
knew what was up with the
b-side, but everyone and
their mother was jockin' 40
Below Trooper.

On The Road
Again/Simple As
That - Warner Bros.
1993 (41035)
Even though everyone
basically fronted on their 3rd
album, this 12" gave fans a
little treat with a very nice
Q-Tip remix. There weren't
too many changes to the
original but Q-Tip somehow
resurrected the LP version
from the dead and made it
an instant hit with a good
number of people. NOTE:
On The Road Again is just a
new (and politically correct)
name for 'My Jimmy Wieghs
A Ton'.

How Ya Want
It/The Jungle, The
Brothers - Gee
Street 1996
3 cuts off the the new album
that really didn't generate
the hype that the JB's would
have liked over here in North
America. But, amazingly,
blew the hell up in Europe,
with a lot of magazines and
European heads throwing
their support towards this
project.

Brain- Gee Street
1997
'Brain' is actually a decent
track...and if there's one
piece of JB's wax you need
from the 4th LP, it's probably
this one. It's a pretty
uptempo song with some
decent, yet far from
mind-blowing, lyrics.

Brain- Gee Street

Unfortunately, this 12" really
sucks, even for 12"s that
feature wack UK remixes. If
you're really curious, the
Stereo MC's actually come
up with the most decent
remix while the other 2 are
basically unlistenable. But all
three pale in comparison to
the original.

As was the case with 'Brain',

shines on this 12".

the Stereo MC's, and this
12" does nothing to sway
my opinion of them.
