Grammy-nominated producer Rick Chertoff has had hits
on Cyndi Lauper, the Hooters, Joan Osborne and
Sophie B. Hawkins among others. The Great Neck,
Long Island NY native met his long-time music business
partners Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian of the Hooters
while attending the University Of Pennsylvania.
While an executive at Columbia Records, Chertoff
found his biggest success with
Portrait/Epic artist Cyndi Lauper. Her platinum
single, "Girl Just Want To Have Fun" hit
#2 Pop in late 1983 on Billboard's charts. Lauper's
album, So Unusual, sold five
million copies went to #4 Pop, early 1984 and included
"Time After Time", a gold #1
Pop single in spring 1984 "All Through The Night",
#5 Pop, fall 1984 and the #3 Pop
hits "Money Changes Everything", late 1984 and
the gold "She Bop", summer 1984.
Chertoff's other Columbia albums include the Hooters'
two-million selling album,
Nervous Night, #12 Pop, fall 1985 and the gold
LP One Way Home, #27 Pop,
summer 1987 and 1996's "Hooterization", British
pop trio The Outfield's double
platinum "Play Deep", #9 Pop, spring 1986 and Joan

Best remembered for a string of mid-'80s hits including
the MTV staple "And We Danced," Philadelphia rockers
the Hooters were led by singer/keyboardist Rob Hyman
and singer/guitarist Eric Bazilian, whose longtime
creative partnership also yielded hits for artists including
Cyndi Lauper and Joan Osborne. Hyman and Bazilian
first teamed in the group Baby Grand, which also
included future producer Rick
Chertoff; after a pair of LPs for Arista, the band
dissolved in 1978, with the Hooters
forming soon after. Also including guitarist John
Lilley, bassist Rob Miller, and
drummer David Uosikkinen, the group honed an eclectic
blend of rock, folk, and ska,
taking their name from the melodica, or "hooter,"
which lent their sound its distinctive
edge; while the Hooters earned a devoted cult following
at home in Philadelphia,
Hyman and Bazilian also enjoyed busy careers as
composers and session players,
most notably contributing extensively to Cyndi
Lauper's 1983 blockbuster She's So

team consists of three producers. The producers are DeJa(myself), C-Love

cote), and Chuco (Manny Duarte) which all hail from Chelmsford with California

Low's album will be released on July 18'th, 2002. Next year we will be
currently recording at Teddy Riley's studio in Virginia Beach. Also we
will be
recording at DARP Studios(Dallas Austin,TLC),Daddy's House (P-Diddy),Chuck
Life Studios( Chucky Thompson),Dajhelon Studios, mix engineer Jimmy
Douglas(Timbaland,Missy,Jodeci), and Manny (Sisqo). The lead and only singer
myself(DeJa),will be the renaisance man. I bring that funk soul for the
year
4000.My major influences are DeVante Swing, Teddy Riley, Prince, Stevie
J,
Darryl Pearson, Rodney Jerkins, and newcomer She'kspere. If it wasn' for
you
guys, I wouldn't be creating the most innovative slow jamz. I would like
to

Germany's Hip-Hop On Rise, June 15, 2000

Who would have thought 15 years ago, that Germany would have so much
impact on the world with its music today? Well, people who live in Europe,
have already stopped convincing themselves not to get surprised anymore
over the fact that Germany (which has the largest music market in Europe)is
simply the best not only in making the best cars in the world but also
the best
dance music. Mysteriously enough, at the end of 1996 Germany launched its
huge hip-hop virus all over the world with acts like NANA, C-BLOCK, PAPPA
BEAR Feat. JAN VAN TOORN, A.K.-S.W.I.F.T., and of course DOWN LOW.
DOWN LOW, who were already well known with their first album called
"Visions" not only in Germany but also in Frnace and in other Eoropean
territories, shocked the entire GSA (Germany, Switzerland, Austria) region
once again with their 1997 single called "Johnny B." which immediately
after
its release became a huge hit peaking at no. 4 position in Germany's official
single chart (Media Control). DOWN LOW, after getting done with introducing
their 1998 album called "It Ain't Over" (which was started off with singles
called "Moonlight" and "Johnny B.") desided to come back with another
album, this time calling it "The Third Dimension." The hit single released
at the
end of 1998 (which was released to get things started off for "The Third
Dimension") also went straight to no. 4 in Germany's official single chart
(Media control). This single, however, called "Once Upon A Time" was known
as the best work of DOWN LOW, which had unique opera flavor behind Joe's
rap and Mike's vocal. The best of DOWN LOW CD contains every single hit
by
the act that I just mentioned. One, who loves hip-hop along with beautifully
arranged vocals, should not miss this German hip-hop act called DOWN
LOW. Enjoy!

I first heard this track in Greece and have loved it ever since.I now request

every time I return to Greece as it is my favourite song of all time!I

searching for Johnny B in England,Greece and America but have not had any
luck! The web was my last and only hope! Thank you, I now know more about
this fantastic track!I would and have already recommended Down Low to a
lot
of people, it is pure magic.

THE STORY FROM THE BEGINNING
DOWN LOW were founded in December 1995 in the K-Town studios
in Kaiserslautern. It
is the biggest US community outside the USA (500f the
population are American and
it's a great place for Rap and Hip-Hop producers because
many US G's start a music
career after leaving the army).
The members of DOWN LOW are JOE THOMPSON and MlKE DALlEN.
Joe is a US American
aged born in 1972. He took part in operation Desert Storm
in the Gulf whilst in the
army. He then left the forces and began rapping with
friends like Rod. D (Fun
Factory). Mike has a father in the military but has devoted
his life to music, met
Joe and formed Down Low. The boys write good melodies
and commercial raps. Their
first single "Vision Of Life" was a big hit - Top 20
in Germany, Top 10 in France
plus chart entries in Austria and Switzerland.
This sound revolutionized almost four months in the Charts
the industry. Afterwards
artist followed such as C-Block, NANA, A.K.-S.W.I.F.T,
R´n´G, etc.. European Hip Hop
on the advance - as music direction and culture. In addition,
DOWN LOW proved that
they are not more wonder a " one hit ". They were represented
as only act in this
music style since 1 1/2 years with each single in the
Charts.
Joe, and Mike.
Inspired by the O.J. Simpson story, the duo then wrote
and recorded "Murder" - which
also charted in the above territories. This was followed
by the album VISIONS in
November 96 - which entered the German album chart. Their
next single "Lovething"
was considered by ZYX UK to be the track to introduce
Down Low onto home territory.
The debut album "Visions"
The rapper Joe Thompson and the singer Mike Dalien are
characterised however also by
their impressively represented Live appearances. As the
" BEST PERFORMING " and
usually-posted tape of Germany was distinguished DOWN
LOW equal in the first year of
its existence of radio NRJ as " the best RWS act 1997
". The Live Performance of the
interaction with the public, the souligen voice of German
American Mike Dalien and
the printoutful raps lives and the Action of Rapper Joe.
"It Ain´t Over", the 2nd topselling album.
After the big success with their debut album "Visions",
DOWN LOW released their two
first singles from the 2nd album in late ´97 "Moonlight"
and "Johnny B". "Johnny
B" sold gold in several countries, and they got their
breakthrough in Scandinavia
aswell (nr 14 in the Swedish charts). Then they released
the 2nd album "It Ain´t
Over" and it god bigger then the first one. The third
and last single from "It
Ain´t Over" was "Hit Me Right", released in the summer
of´98. It was a big
summerhit with fat lyrics. I think it is one of Down
Low´s most "bumpy" songs. I
love it.
Now DOWN LOW, better ever, put again loosely. The first
single from their 3rd album
was " Once Upon A time ", published in October´98. In
" Once Upon A time " DOWN
LOW of items from the classical author " play me the
song of death " processed. The
lyrics to the song are just wonderful. See it in DOWN
LOW Songtexts on my
homepage. "Once Upon A Time" was a huge success (again)
for DOWN LOW. It reached
top5 in several countries. Their third album "Third Dimension"
was released in
late ´98, and in the beginning of ´99, they released
their single "H.I.V.", yet
another track with fantastic lyrics and superb video.
"Third Dimension", the 3rd and best album.
In summer of ´99 came the next single, "So Long Goodbye...".
They have slowed down
the song and released a really different version, then
the album version. I love the
video. It is really great. I almost weeped when I saw
it the first time. The song
has some wonderful lyrics and it´s about broken relationchips.
In August´99, DOWN LOW released a "Best Of" album. The
album contains the greatest
hits of Down Low like "Johnny B", "Once Upon A Time",
"Vision Of Life" and "So Long
Goodbye...", so for all you Down Low-lovers and fans,
go get it!
"Best Of", the latest CD from Down Low
out in the stores since August´99!
Then, in December 1999, Down Low released the wonderful
song "Thank You" as a
x-mas´99 single. "Thank You" is my favourite song from
the album "Third Dimension"
and I have always loved the song. I was hoping that they
would release it as a
single and so they did.
In February 2001, Down Low made a comeback with the brand new and
previous unreleased single "Don't You". A great great track!
Hopefully they are working on the new album and I will let you
know as soon as I get to know anything. For now, don't miss the

THE ALBUMS:
VISIONS
This album, released in 1995, is probably the breakthrough
for European HipHop. And when you listen to the album, you'll
probably understand why so many people bought it. You
won´t only get the 4hit singles, "Vision Of Life", "Murder",
"Lovething" and "Potion", you´ll get a whole album of
hits! Song like "Don´t Look Any Further", "Mr Five" and the great
song "Nothing Like Viva" with Flip Da Scrip. My advise,
buy the album!
IT AIN´T OVER
"It Ain´t Over" is the best-selling album from Down Low,
thanks to the huge hits "Johnny B", "Moonlight" and "Hit Me Right",
was released in late 1997. The cd is really superb.
There are 15 tracks and not enough of that, you´ll get the four bonus tracks,
from "Visions" aswell. If you buy the album and listen
through it, you will realize that you´ve bought a damn good HipHop./r&b
album. Songs like "Every Day", "Open", "What Would You
Do?" and "She Can´t Love You" are just amazing. And they
also recorded a "Murder Part II" to continue the story
from "Murder" in the 1st album. Too see the tracklist and more about the

THIRD DIMENSION
The 3rd, and in my opinion, the best album from Down Low,
was released in the late 1998. The album begins with the fat "Intro"
and then goes in to the wonderful "Once Upon A Time".
You get into a wonderful mood immediately. There are some really
great songs on the album. All of the songs are great,
but I´ll pick "I Wonder Why", "Thank U", "H.I.V." and "So Long
Goodbye" as my favorites. "Thank U" is a wonderful Christmas
song. Down Low show some slow hiphop and r&b style aswell in
"Freak On" and "I Will Give You What You Need" and the
uppumping "This Be Da Reason". The album end with the
track for Motown "Brick House". Too see more about the

Vormarsch als Musikrichtung und Kultur. DOWN LOW
bewiesen aber auch, daß sie kein "one hit wonder"
sind. Sie waren als einziger Act in diesem Musikstil
seit 1 ½ Jahren mit jeder Single in den Charts
vertreten. Dazu verbuchten sie, als einziger in
Deutschland produzierter Act in dieser Richtung, im
europäischen Ausland eine riesige Akzeptanz. Bereits
die erste Single landete in Frankreich einen Mega Hit
und einen Platz in den Top Ten (Platz 8). Danach
folgten die Hit-Singles: Murder, Potion, Lovething/We
do it like that, Moonlight, Jonny B. (Gold), Hit me
right. Der Rapper Joe Thompson und der Sänger Mike
Dalien zeichnen sich jedoch auch durch ihre
eindrucksvoll dargestellten Live-Auftritte aus. Als
die "BEST PERFORMING" und meistgebuchte Band
Deutschlands wurde DOWN LOW gleich im ersten Jahr
ihres Bestehens von Radio NRJ als "Bester Rap Act
1997" ausgezeichnet. Dabei lebt die Live Perfomance
von der Interaktion mit dem Publikum, der souligen
Stimme von Deutsch-Amerikaner Mike Dalien und den
ausdrucksvollen Raps und der Action von Rapper Joe.
Jetzt legten DOWN LOW, besser den je, noch einmal los.
Die neue Single "Once Upon A Time" wurde im Oktober
veröffentlicht. In "Once Upon A Time" haben DOWN LOW
Elemente aus dem Klassiker "Spiel mir das Lied vom
Tod". verarbeitet. Die Single stieg auf Platz 11(!!!)
der Charts ein und wurde ein weiterer Tophit von DOWN
LOW (inzwischen GOLD). Im November erschien das dritte
Hitalbum der Chartrapper mit dem Namen "Third
Dimension". Neben dem Superhit "Once Upon A Time" sind
weitere 12 heiße Hip Hop Traxx auf dem Album.

Im Dezember 1995 entstand durch ein
Produzententeam von Shift Music und Rapper Joe
Thompson der erste Hit von Down Low "Vision of
Life".
Nach dem Mega Radio Hit bewiesen Rapper Joe
Thompson und Sänger Mike Dalien schnell, dass
sie kein "One Hit Wonder" sind.
Sie waren mit ihrem Hip-Hop Grooves und coolen
Beats Stil die Vorreiter der sogenannten
Euro-Hip-Hop Bewegung und gaben Acts wie
Nana, C-Block, Pappa Bear, etc. das Entrée für die
neue Stilrichtung.
Durch die Live Performance, der souligen Stimme
von Deutsch -Amerikaner Mike und den Raps und
der Action von Joe wurde die "Best Performing" und
meistgebuchte Band Deutschlands von Radio NRJ
als "Bester Rap Act 1997" ausgezeichnet.
Europaweit verbuchte Down Low Erfolge.
Frankreich, Österreich, Spanien, Italien, Schweiz,
usw. wurden mit Top 10 von Down Low
überschwemmt.
10 Chart Singles (!) , darunter Ohrwürmer wie
"Johnny B.", "once upon a time", etc. gipfelten in
mittlerweile 3 Alben.
Down Low ruhen sich jedoch nicht auf ihren
goldenen Lorbeeren aus, sondern brachten als
krönenden Rückblick auf ständige Chart- und
Medienpräsenz das "Best of" Album raus und

die deutschen Rapper und Hip-Hop-Aufsteiger
Das ist eine Gruppe, die einen ganz amerikanischen
Musikstil in Deutschland gebastelt hat. Hip Hop -
früher hieß das mal einfach Rap-Musik - ist der
Lebensinhalt von Down Low, den beiden Jungs, die am
liebsten die ganze Musikbranche umkrempeln würden.
Wie sich´s als deutscher Rapper lebt und was man
fühlt, wenn´s nur um die Musik geht, davon können
Joe Thompson und Mike Dalien alias Down Low etwas
erzählen.
Eure Musik klingt ja sehr amerikanisch, aber
Ihr lebt in Deutschland. Wie ist denn der
Unterschied, wenn Ihr das vergleicht?
Joe Thomson: Hip-Hop kommt aus Amerika, und wir
machen unsere Songs so, dass jeder mitsingen kann.
Schließlich haben wir eine ganze Reihe von Fans,
und wir sagen uns immer, was Michael singt, muss
man nach einer Weile auch mitsingen können. Das ist
uns besonders wichtig.
Seid Ihr schon mal mit Ausländerhaß
konfrontiert worden?
Mike Dalien: Haß nicht direkt. Aber ich habe einen
Zwillingsbruder, und als wir jünger waren, da haben
wir in einer Gegend gewohnt, da waren farbige Leute
nicht allzu häufig. Und wenn irgendwo etwas
passiert ist, vielleicht eine Fensterscheibe
eingeworfen wurde, da hieß es gleich, mein Bruder
und ich hätten es getan.
Ihr seid beide relativ christlich eingestellt.
Auf einer CD heißt es: "Send my spiritual love
to my heavenly father Jesus Christ.." Das
schreibt nicht jeder auf seine CD..
Joe Thompson: Ich hatte vor Down Low eine
wirklich schlechte Zeit, da ging es rauf und
runter. Wenn mir damals irgendetwas geholfen hat,
dann der Glaube an Jesus. Er hat mir die mentale
Kraft für meinen Weg gegeben, und ist für mich wie
ein bester Freund. Ich habe keine Familie hier,
außer meiner kleinen Tochter. Jesus ist für uns wie
ein guter Freund, immer da, der nimmt uns sozusagen
an die Hand.
Mike Dalien: Vielleicht liegt es an der Erziehung.
Ich habe den Glauben von klein auf mitbekommen und
bin auch immer gerne zur Kirche gegangen. Gut als
wir älter wurden, war das seltener der Fall, weil
man Samstag abends lange weggeht. Ich renne also
nicht jeden Sonntag in die Kirche. Aber wir beide
glauben und beten auch.

RAPPERS AGAINST
RACISM
Zum Projekt RAR schlossen
sich mehrere Rapper der
europäischen HIP HOP Szene
zusammen, um auf das
bestehende Problem der
Rassendiskriminierung unter
Jugendlichen in Deutschland
hinzuweisen. Die Idee stammt
von Joe Thompson, Rapper von
DOWN LOW und Ronald Bähr von K-TOWN-RECORDS. Da
sich die Jugendlichen sehr mit der Hip Hop-Musik
identifizieren, es aber dennoch bei Konzerten
immer wieder zu rassistischen Bemerkungen kam,
wollen die Rapper das Publikum durch ihre mit
dem Problem konfrontieren.
Erste Single ? I want to know what love is?
Zweite Single ? Key to your heart?
Danach kam die Schmuseballade ? Only You?,
zuletzt veröffentlicht von den Flying Pickets,
interpretiert von TROOPER. Bei dem Titel ?SORRY?
ist zum ersten mal J.Supreme dabei, der den
Unverwechselbaren ?Culture-Beat-Rap? auch in
diesem Projekt zum besten gibt . Das Album ? the
message? ist mit ?Only You? und vielen anderen
Supersongs eine gelungene Scheibe. Bei den
nächsten Veröffentlichungen werden sich weitere
bekannte Rapper aus Europa an dem Projekt
beteiligen.

Rappers against racism non è un
vero e proprio gruppo quanto
piuttosto un progetto a più mani di
alcune formazioni europee (di
colore) di hip-hop. Lo scopo, come
chiaramente si evince dal nome del
"progetto", è quello di protestare
contro ogni forma di razzismo, che
ogni tanto fa capolino nel vecchio
Continente europeo.
All'interno del progetto appaiono
nomi più o meno noti dlla scena hip-hop europea: Down Low,
Fade2Black, LaMazz, Dungeon Mastaz ed altri. Una coppia di
nomi però fanno capolino un po' in tutti i pezzi, ovvero Trooper Da
Don e Rick, vere menti promotrici dell'idea originale.
L'album è molto vario ma lo stile può essere facilmente riassunto
nell'accezione "European hip-hop da classifica", ovvero un mix di
sonorità orecchiabili, campionamenti di brani ultra-conosciuti
(impossibile citarli tutti), ritmi trascinanti, testi di protesta (ma non
sempre!) e produzione di buon livello.
Gli hit radiofonici super-programmati spaziano da "Only you" a "Key
to your heart" ed hanno tutte le carte in regola per ronzare in testa
per settimane intere. La qualità complessiva è buona, se si accetta
una certa "facilità" di fruizione che farà un po' storcere il naso ai
puristi/integralisti del genere. Non posso però evitare di citare
alcune perle di notevole spessore: Key to your heart, un hit di
sicura presa ma davvero convincente e che non stanca neppure
dopo ascolti ripetuti; What would you do e Rhythm of life, i due
pezzi più belli di tutto il lavoro, eseguiti dal duo tedesco Down
Low (ragazzi di colore emigrati in Germania) ed ancora il pregevole
campionamento di I wanna know what love is.
Sono i pezzi dei Down Low ad elevare la media qualitativa di tutto
il lavoro: atmosfere scure, ottimi testi (denuncia contro i nuovi partiti
neo-nazisti della loro Germania), ritmi ipnotici e trascinanti, uso
moderato di scratch ed elettronica, ottimi "chorus"...due ragazzi da
attendere per una prova più "completa" visto che finora hanno
pubblicato, a quanto mi risulta, solo dei singoli e al max degli EP.
Un pezzo decisamente insolito è invece Nostradame con una
voce soprano (una tal Annabelle) che fa il "chorus" per un sapore
in pieno stile "Enigma" davvero curioso, mentre il rap di Trooper
(Down Low) scandisce il ritmo ipnotico. Molto strano...ma molto
bello.
Altrettanto strano il brano Eracism con un rap sparato sopra un
brano di violoncello che replica all'infinito la stessa sequenza di
poche note.
In definitiva, un disco che a me è piaciuto molto e da subito, senza
bisogno di doverlo "macinare" come spesso accade con molti
dischi di hip-hop meno immediati. Questo è fresco, facile ed
intuitivo: potete dimenticarvelo in repeat sul CD in auto, non c'è
pericolo di dover sperimentare quella spiacevole sensazione di
sentire per ore sempre lo stesso pezzo, come talvolta capita.
Se non avete mai ascoltato questo genere musicale, questo album
vi potrà aiutare nella scoperta. Se amate già il genere, magari
potreste preferire qualcosa di più duro e cattivo ma, fossi in voi, un
ascolto (o due) lo farei...non si sa mai, potrebbe piacervi come è
piaciuto a me che seguo l'hip-hop sin dai suoi primi passi.
