Deejay Punk-Roc
"..Calling all cars: Be on the lookout for a mean
muthafucker with dimples carrying a black beatbox.."
Deejay Punk-Roc was born in Brooklyn, New York in
1971 and grew up to be a respected member of the US
Army. Now 26 years old and built like a brick
shithouse he is armed and dangerous - swapping his
guns and regiment for a beatbox and a pair of decks,
he's ready to blow the whole joint up.
The youngest of six kids, Deejay Punk-Roc grew up
listening to all kinds of funky shit. His dad would
be spinning tunes from Barry White to the Isley
Brothers. He now boasts a record collection of over
15,000 albums (not counting the singles) and cites
his major musical influences as the abovementioned
Barry White, George Clinton's Parliament,
Grandmaster Flash and the Sugar Hill Gang while
Hashim The Soul's 'Al-Nayfish', Sugar Hill Gang's
'8th Wonder' and Grandmaster Flash's 'Apache' are
among some of his favourite songs.
Leaving high school and home at sixteen years old,
Deejay Punk-Roc joined the US military. "..I was up
to no good. Like everybody else I just didn't
caught. The army took me off the streets and
instilled a discipline in me that enables me to do
what I'm doing now. I was stationed in Japan,
Germany and England for a while and travelling
around so much really broadened my mind.." He left
the army five years ago and has been chilling pretty
much ever since. "It was good to get with my boys.
Hanging out, listening to and making music."
Deejay Punk-Roc made his first tune four years ago.
A friend of his had a little studio equipment and
they would make tunes for themselves and their
friends. There was no agenda, just pure, spontaneous
fun. He'd been DJing at block parties since he was a
kid. This passion manifested itself as 'The Busted
Speaker', a party night he organised in a
neighbourhood park. By the second week you couldn't
move for gangs of kids all carrying beatboxes up for
a challenge.
This lead to the recording of the track 'My Beatbox'
which was picked up by Airdog Recordings and
released on their Still Searchin compilation in May
1997. 'My Beatbox' mixes the sound of police sirens,
old school electro beats, hip-hop, breakbeats, big
beats ... and seemlessly fusing them all into a
series of speaker popping beats of large
proportions. Airdog loved the track and were keen to
have an album recorded. 'My Beatbox' was an
indication of the emergence of a major new talent
which the album tracks, upon their speedy arrival
from New York, reinforced. Tracks like 'Far Out'
with its unrelenting, gunfirevocal delivery and
hard-hitting beats, the mellower jazzy-funk vibes of
'Rockin' it', 'The World Is My Ashtray' and 'All You
Ladies' makes for an impressive and varied album.
Deejay Punk-Roc describes the music he makes as a
combination of everything musical he's ever known.
"...I've never headed in one particular direction.
It's like a big pot into which I throw everything
and hope that it comes out nice...."
It sure does.
DEEJAY PUNK-ROC
"The first true star to emerge from the burgeoning
nu-breaks scene" -Update
They're calling it the nu-breaks scene.
Strobe-quick edits, thick 'n' chunky scratching,
mountain-moving drum loops-all the good stuff of
golden era '80s funkin' up the big-beat
jazzy/lounge sound of au courant mega-faves like
Chemical Brothers, Propeller-heads, and the
Crystal Method.
"It's a bold experiment that could have easily
failed, but didn't" -CMJ New Music Monthly
DeeJay Punk-Roc is the mixmaster with Old
School hip hop ties and next big thing tastes
who's putting breakers back spinning on their
backs. ChickenEye is the full-length debut out on
Independiente/Epic that's about to take clubland
and the world beyond by storm.
"If you don't dance to this, you've had your legs
amputated" -Mixmag (UK)
Scope the first single off ChickenEye: "My
Beatbox," complete with police siren,
adrenaline-to-the-spine bass lines and
go-for-the-jugular vocoder. But first make sure
you've got something to put between your back
and the floor.
"These beats are machine-gun Massive with a
capital M for mental..." - DJ Magazine
Be warned: With bass-driven tunes like "I Hate
Everybody" and "Far Out," the beats hit hard and
the gunfire rapid vocals hit even harder.
"Taking in everything from Sugar Hill to Beastie
Boys, ChickenEye is truly this year's melt-ing pot"
-Vox
There's a mellow, jazzy funk kind of vibe on such
tunes as "Rocking It," "The World Is My Ashtray,"
"All You Ladies," and "No Meaning." They're
dangerously infectious: full-throttle fusion, no
confusion at all.
"Calling all cars: Be on the lookout for a mean
muthafucka with dimples carrying a black
beatbox..." - "My Beatbox"
The youngest of six children, 26-year-old DeeJay
Punk-Roc is Brooklyn, NY, born and raised. With
a father who listened to everything from Barry
White to the Isley Brothers, DeeJay Punk-Roc
grew up with few musical prejudices. He loved
music and loved sharing it, DJing at block parties

"I was up to no good, like everybody else-I just
didn't get caught. The Army took me off the
streets and instilled a discipline in me that
enables me to do what I'm doing now" -DeeJay
Punk-Roc
DeeJay Punk-Roc left high school and home at
16 to join the US military. During his eight years in
uniform, Punk-Roc was stationed in Japan,
Germany, and England. In addition to discipline,
he credits the military with broadening his mind.
"It was good to get to my boys. Hanging out,
listening to, and making, music..."
DeeJay Punk-Roc returned to civilian life in 1993.
Within a year he'd organized a party night called
The Busted Speaker at a neighborhood school
park. Small groups of kids with beatboxes turned
up for a challenge.
"ChickenEye is an album that explodes like the
greatest block party you ever dreamed of"
-Melody Maker
With no special agenda-just for pure,
spontaneous fun-DeeJay Punk-Roc got together
with a friend who had a small amount of studio
equipment. Among the tracks laid down was "My
Beatbox"-picked up by Airdog Recordings (his UK
label) and released on their 1997 Still Searchin'
compilation.
"A must for all beat freaks" -Muzik
Groups as diverse as The Beastie Boys,
Pitchshifter, Korn, and Force MDs have called on
DeeJay Punk-Rock for his slammin' remix
production touch. Among those who have paid
their respects to Punk-Roc with their own remix
tributes: Mantronix, Roc Raida, Run DMC's Jam
Master Jay, Mick Jones's Big Audio Dynamite.
And, DeeJay Punk-Rock just completed a
national tour with electronic rockers The Prodigy
and industrial-breakbeat pioneers Meat Beat
Manifesto.
"I've never headed in one particular direction. It's
kinda like a big pot into which I throw everything
and hope that it comes out nice..."
DeeJay Punk-Roc's record collection numbers
15,000 albums and uncounted singles. His major
musical influences are Barry White, George
Clinton's Parliament-Funkadelic, and
Grandmaster Flash and the Sugar Hill Gang.

"There isn't much about DeeJay Punk-Roc that is
punk rock. He's the latest bigbeat sensation from
the U.K., and with reason - his grooves are even
more edgy and in-yer face than those of his
boogie brethren." "His (carefully) hap hazard mix
of dub effects, beefy rhythms and feaky-deaky
sampledelica may be the dance floor Molotov
cocktail of '98."
BPM Culture Magazine
"Loaded with everything from awesome sax solos

As the buzz builds stateside.... The Beastie Boys,
Pitchshifter, Korn, force Mds and many others
have all called on the slammin' remix production
touch of the one they call DeeJay Punk-Roc with
a series of streetstyle mixes. Not to mention that
the hip hop and electro communities - Mantronix,
Roc Raida, and Run DMC's Jam Master Jay - as
well as Wall of sound's most righteous artist Les
Rythmes Digitales and, former clash frontman,
Mick Jones' Big audio Dynamite have all paid their
respects with their own remix tributes to Mr.
Punk-Roc.
Getting further respect from his musical peers,
Punk-Roc is just coming off a national US tour
with electronic-rockers the Prodigy and
industrial-breakbeat pioneers Meat Beat

props from electronic music's most successful
artists, he's finally getting some long over-due
