(Volume/Vital)
The evolution of drum 'n' bass, from its dark
hardcore street-sound beginnings was
looking like it might wash itself out and
become another cafe soundtrack. But if
Breakbeat Science is any indication of the
future of drum n' bass, things are
looking very "dark" (good) again. Sounding
more like the early Breakdown Records
compilations of three years ago, the first
of the new Volume series represents some
high profile artists like Omni Trio, Spring
Heel Jack, Ed Rush, and Roni Size. Low
profile artist, ex-Bark Psychosis singer Graham
Sutton, now known as Boymerang, also
contributes. Courtesy of the makers of Trans
Europe Express 1-4, Volume are no
slouches when it comes to offering an attractive
package, complete with
comprehensive colour booklet and loads of
information. Not to mention one of the
best collections of drum n' bass innovation
you'll hear. (8)
