Fun'Da'Mental
Fun'Da'Mental have been on the cutting edge and breaking new ground since they began in 1991. Fuelled by the same ethos as Public Enemy, smashing down 'stereotypical' theories and causing mental confusion, pushing two or more opposing concepts and making something new, transforming and recreating musical ideas. Sampled political speeches from historical figures such as Malcom X, Louis Farrakhan or Mahatma Ghandi merge with layers of Zikar, Qawali music, African folk, Aboriginal, all held together by the driving force of hardcore hip-hop beats. CD Single: The Last Gospel[NRCD2007]
Promo released 4/01. Official release set for 9th July 2001. Tracks 1,2 & 4 written by Qureshi, Rizwan and Muazzam. Track 3 written by Qureshi featuring Zamo Mbhuto. 'The Last Gospel' is a combining of tradition and technology; the junction where the organic meets the dynamic; where the majestic gospel of the deep south resides alongside spiritual Sufi Qawwals and Zulu choirs. The next evolutionary leap for 'eclectic' fusion. Fun-Da-Mental main man Aki Nawaz spent the last year travelling from his neighbourhood of Lahore, Pakistan (famous for being the place where music journalists lose their mind) to the sun-soaked surroundings of South Africa and back to the grey drizzle of the UK, to call upon the energy and intensity of a host of awesome talent: the uplifting vocal glory of brothers Rizwan and Muazzam, the prodigal nephews of the late Qawwali maestro Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan; ardent violin virtuoso Riaz Hussain, and the soul-attacking roar of Johannesburg's Zamo Mhbuto. The record buttin refused to be paused - vocal chords stretch over colossal terrains of dub-bass enormity, furious 'Desi' percussion erupts over sampled snatches of rage, opposing cultures weave inside each other - it shouldn't work but it does. This is only a small taste of the big second couse meal that is to come - the album 'There Shall be Love' featuring all the above and further aural collisions. Press Release. Thanks to Nation Records for this promo release.
